Jalandhar is one of the oldest cities in the country. During the British colonisation of India, it was called Jullundur. According to a legend it was named after a demon king mentioned in Mahabharata. Another version says that it got its name from the term Jalandhar because it is situated between the two rivers Sutlej and Beas. The whole district was a part of the Indus Valley Civilisation; which today’s extensive archaeological findings can confirm.
From the modern history: In the early 1920 the well-known Khilafat Movement started here. This movement was even supported by Mahatma Gandhi. One of the main goals of the movement was to force the British government in India to reconsider their political approach to Turkey. The movement was successful. British government signed Seditious Meeting act, where the whole district was called a 'Proclaimed Area'.
However, when India became independent, Jalandhar faced riots from locals. As a result, most of the minor communities were forced to leave.
Jalandhar is considered as headquarters for all regional media – radio, national televisions and newspapers.
The city has mayor production of sports goods which are exported to internationally. It also produces goods such as glass and furniture locally to nearby cities.
